Bertie Carvel attended Sussex University where he read English and received a First Class Honours Degree, before then going on to graduate from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 2003.

In addition to acting, his other skills include; Kung Fu (he is a Black Belt), Combat Fighting (he received a Distinction (First Class) in BASSC Fight Test), speaks French and also sings (he has a strong high baritone voice.)

His theatre credits include 'The Man of Mode', 'Coram Boy', 'The Life of Galileo' at the National Theatre, 'Professor Bernhardi', 'Rose Bernd' with Oxford Stage Company, and 'Revelations' at the Hampstead Theatre. In 2007, he starred as "Leo Frank" in the musical 'Parade' by Jason Robert Brown at the Donmar Warehouse. In 2010, he played Miss Trunchbull in the musical 'Matilda' with the Royal Shakespeare Company, reprising his role again when 'Matilda' transfered to the Cambridge Theatre, London in October 2011. He left the role for the UK run in July 2012, but is reprising it for the the musicals run on Broadway from March 4 2013.

For television, Bertie has also appeared as Lord Carmarthen, in the HBO miniseries 'John Adams', 'Doctor Who' (S3E6, The Lazarus Experiment, which featured Mark Gatiss), 'Bombshell', 'Hawking' alongside 'Sherlock' costar Benedict Cumberbatch, 'The Crimson Petal and the White' alongside another 'Sherlock' costar Mark Gatiss, and 'Money'.
