Originally studying Sociology at the University of Nottingham, and then lecturing in English as a foreign language at the Sapienza University of Rome, Haydn Gwynne took up acting in her mid-twenties. Her most prominent early role was in the first two series of classic British comedy series 'Drop the Dead Donkey' from 1990, set in the offices of a fictional television news broadcaster.

Her later television work includes 'Peak Practice' for three series between 1999 and 2000, 'Merseybeat' (2001), 'The Secret' (2002), the HBO Series 'Rome' (2005), Lewis (2008) and 'Sherlock: The Great Game' (2010).

Haydn is prolific in the theatre world, starring in 'Billy Elliot: The Musical' both in London's West End and on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre, for which she was nominated for an Olivier Award and won the Outer Critics Circle Award, Theatre World Award, and Drama Desk Award for her performance. Her credits include numerous roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and in 2011 she starred in the Sam Mendes directed production of 'Richard III' at the Old Vic alongside Kevin Spacey.
