Born Stephen Gray in Romford, Essex, Stephen was brought up on the Isle of Wight on the southern coast of England. Discovering that another performer already had his birth name, he selected the name of the island where he grew up for his stage name.

Having trained at the London Drama Centre, Stephen's first screen appearance was in 'Casualty' in 2003. Numerous guest spots in other series followed, including 'A Touch of Frost' (2003), 'The Bill' (2004), 'Hex' (2004), 'Ashes to Ashes' (2008), 'Misfits' (2009), 'New Tricks' (2011) and 'Sherlock: The Hounds of Baskerville' (2012). Stephen also appeared in recurring roles in 'Whites' (2010) and 'Threesome' (2011).

On the stage, Stephen won The Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the 2007 Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his performances in 'Don Juan in Soho' at the Donmar Warehouse and in the revival of Patrick Marber's 'Dealer's Choice'. He has since appeared in Alan Bennett's 'The Habit of Art', and the 2011 production of 'The Ladykillers' in the West End.
