He was member of the cast for a decade, departing in 1993 when his character was a victim of the infamous 'Emmerdale Plane Crash'. He appeared in guest roles in series including 'The Lakes' (1999); 'The Bill' (1999); 'In Deep' (2002); and 'Conviction' (2004).

He starred in the dark comedy series 'Dead Man Weds' in 2005, and the acclaimed television mini-series 'Red Riding' (2009), which was released in cinemas in the United States. In 2011 he starred in the drama 'Scott & Bailey' - which also featured Rupert Graves - and a two part story in 'Silent Witness'. In early 2012 he made a memorable appearance as Lestrade's boss in 'Sherlock: The Reichenbach Fall.'
