Sarah Arthur is a long serving costume designer on British
television. Initially working on TV movies, she entered work on
episodic series with 'The Cops' [1998], followed by designing for
39 episodes of 'Bad Girls' between 1999 and 2001.
She then worked exclusively on every episode of 'Footballers
Wives' for the series' five years between 2002 and 2006. Other
credits include 'Holby Blue' [2007] and 'Mistresses' [2008], and
'Toast' [2010] - a biographical television film of the renowned
British chef Nigel Slater - before moving onto 'Sherlock' in 2010.
Sarah jettisoned much of the previous costume design work from the
abandoned pilot episode, retaining only Sherlock's iconic Belstaff
'Milford' coat and Jeff Hope's outfit.
You can find numerous quotes from Sarah Arthur on her thinking
and design choices dotted throughout the items in our Wardrobe
section.
When asked how she achieved Sherlock's look for the BBC
modernisation, Sarah is quoted as saying:"Holmes wouldn't have any
interest in fashion so I went for classic suits with a modern
twist: narrow-leg trousers and a two-button, slim-cut jacket. I
also went for slim-cut shirts and a sweeping coat for all the
action scenes - it looks great against the London skyline."
