Toby Haynes is a graduate of the National Film and Television
School, and began his career in 2003 by directing the short film
'Lost and Found'. In 2004 he directed an episode of the short
anthology series 'Coming Up', designed to showcase work by new
writers.
After a short break, he began directing more mainstream fare,
starting with an episode of Channel 4's long running teenage
orientated soap 'Hollyoaks' in 2007, before beginning an
association with Kudos, directing episodes of children's spy series
M.I. High, and two episodes of the first series of 'Spooks: Code 9'
for BBC Three - itself a spin-off of the main 'Spooks' series
broadcast on BBC One. In 2009, Toby moved away from Kudos and
directed the first two episodes of the beloved supernatural comedy
drama 'Being Human' on BBC Three, and in 2010 directed three
episodes of the ambitious BBC / HBO co-production 'Five Days', a
police procedural drama starring David Morrisey. Immediately after
this, Toby entered the 'Doctor Who' Stable, directed five episodes
spread across series 5 and 6, and all written by Steven Moffat -
the Series 5 two part finale 'The Pandorica Opens' and 'The Big
Bang', the 2010 Christmas Special 'A Christmas Carol', and the
Series 6 opening two part story 'The Impossible Astronaut' and 'Day
of the Moon.' The ordering marks Toby as the only person to ever
direct three consecutive stories in the Doctor Who universe.
From there, Toby was recruited to direct the dramatic final
episode of the second series of Sherlock - 'The Reichenbach Fall'
for Hartswood Films, and has since directed 'Wallander: An Event in
Autumn', the first episode of the third series of the Sweden set
detective drama starring Kenneth Branagh, broadcast in 2012.
He is set to direct a major BBC adaptation of Susanna Clarke's
celebrated historical fantasy novel 'Jonathan Strange & Mr
Norrell'.
