55 Whitehall

55 Whitehall
London, Greater London

London has a dramatic and iconic skyline, and Sherlock has picked a suitably panoramic vantage point to view the city from during one of the most memorable moments in The Empty Hearse.

Sherlock is stood atop 55 Whitehall, a Grade II listed building that houses the government Department for Energy and Climate Change. As a result, it is inaccessible to members of the public. If you are a James Bond fan, the view may also be familiar to you - it plays a similarly dramatic visual role for 007 in Skyfall (2012).

Whitehall is recognised as the centre of the British Government - if you aren't considering the Diogenes Club of course - and as such the length of the street is lined with government departments and ministries. The road directly connects Trafalgar Square at the north to Parliament Square at the south. 55 Whitehall sits on the junction of Whitehall and Great Scotland Yard - the road that gave its name to the home of the Metropolitan Police Force - and lies just north of the Cenotaph memorial, as glimpsed during the motorcycle ride later in The Empty Hearse.
