The Carmichael Home

Address
Tyntesfield house, Bristol

Rich in Gothic styling and filled with ominous dark corners, the home of the Carmichael family in The Abominable Bride was largely filled by the house and grounds of Tyntesfield House. Located in Bristol, the property is under the care of The National Trust having been purchased in 2002. The estate dates to the 16th Century, while the house was built in the 1830s and then extensively remodelled inside and out into its current form in the 1860s.

Holmes and Watson's stakeout on the property was shot inside the house's Aviary, built in 1880 to house exotic birds and later converted into a playroom space.

Interiors for the Watson house were also shot in the panelled drawing rooms of Tyntesfield.

Meanwhile, the maze where Lord and Lady Carmichael have their first encounter with the spectral bride was filmed on location at Longleat House, just outside of Warminster. Famous as the site of the first drive through wildlife safari park outside of Africa, the house added a hedge maze in 1975, claiming the title of the largest maze in Britain.
