Interiors for the Chinese Circus were shot at the Newbridge
Memorial Hall theatre in Newbridge, Wales. Locally known as The
Memo, the hall is Grade II listed. Boasting a cinema and ballroom,
it was originally built in 1924 to function as a memorial for the
local servicemen who died during the First World War, and since
became a focal gathering point for the entire community, but since
the failure of the coal mining industry in the area had begun a
slow decline into disrepair.
Since the filming of Sherlock in the Hall in early 2010, funding
for a restoration of the Newbridge Memo has gathered pace thanks to
the Welsh Assembly and numerous other charitable organisations. The
aim is to restore the building to its former grandeur.
Newbridge lies to the north west of Newport, accessible by road
along the A467.
It is directly accessible by train, and the station opens out
onto the main High Street, with the Newbridge Memo on the opposite
side of the road to the south.
