Designed by Sir Norman Foster, the London Millennium Footbridge,
or simply the Millennium Bridge as it is more commonly known,
opened in June 2000. It forms a direct link from St Paul's
Cathedral on the north bank of the Thames to attractions on the
Southbank, including the Tate Modern Gallery and the restored Globe
Theatre. Infamously, the bridge earnt itself the unfortunate
nickname of 'The Wobbly Bridge' two days after it's opening, when a
charity walk across reported an unexpected swaying motion due to
the weight of numbers crossing. As a result, the bridge closed for
two years for engineering assessments and modification, which saw
the installation of a number of fluid and mass dampers throughout
the structure to counter the natural sway. The bridge today suffers
no issues, and is one of the most visually spectacular modern
constructions in the city.
In A Scandal in Belgravia, Irene Adler can be seen at the
northern entrance of the Millennium Bridge, next to the Salvation
Army Building - though she is not stood upon the bridge itself, the
street leading down to it from Queen Victoria Street shares the
name.
The nearest underground is Mansion House [Circle, District] on
the northern side of the river Thames. Simply proceed west along
Queen Victoria Street and then turn left onto the Millennium
Bridge, with St Paul's Cathedral behind you.
