Doubling up for the fictitious National Antiques Museum in The Blind Banker, National Museum Cardiff is part of the wider network of National Museum Wales, originally founded in 1907. The construction of the Cardiff site began in 1912, but due to the outbreak of the First World War the building was not opened to the public until 1927, and even then in a far reduced design from what the site architects originally conceived.

As well as its appearance in The Blind Banker, The National Museum Cardiff has appeared numerous times in Doctor Who since the series' return in 2006.
