St Athan Airbase

St Athan
South Wales

Sherlock Holmes begins his apparent one way trip to exile from St Athan airbase, a large Ministry of Defence facility located in the Vale of Glamorgan in southern Wales and 18 miles away from Cardiff. The large base is home to several military units from the British Army and Royal Air Force, with the Army facilities occupying the west of the site, the RAF on the east. In the past the base was used as a major maintenance facility for the RAF, set up in 1938 in a position commanders thought was beyond the reach of any potential enemy attack. However, on June 20 1940 the base was attacked by the Luftwaffe, marking the first attack on Wales during the Second World War.

Following the war, St Athan became a site for the decommissioning of aircraft, with fields for miles around filled with rusting Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Lancaster bombers. During the Cold War, St Athan served as a servicing facility for the gigantic Vulcan bomber, and in later years jet aircraft such as Harriers and Tornados.  The base ceased work as an RAF maintenance facility on February 23 2012.
