Actually a stretch of the Thames embankment, Victoria Embankment
runs along the north side of the River Thames, starting at the
corner of Westminster Bridge and running east up to Blackfriars
Bridge. It passes beneath Hungerford Bridge and Waterloo Bridge,
and runs parallel with the South Bank on the opposite side of the
Thames. Built out onto the foreshore of the Thames, the road was
completed in 1870, and thanks to the numerous trees and two public
parks along the route, is one of the prettiest stretches of road in
the capital.
The road is usually extremely busy, but controlled by numerous
traffic lights on long timers. The section of the road that appears
onscreen in Sherlock is located directly beneath the eastern side
of Waterloo Bridge, the railings that Sherlock and John vault
easily spottable - though we wouldn't recommend trying to jump them
yourself unless extremely confident, thanks to the traffic.
The nearest Tube stations are Embankment [Circle, District,
Northern, Bakerloo], which requires you to walk east to Waterloo
Bridge, or Temple [Circle, District] which requires you to walk
west.
