Principal photography has completed on the first episode of Sherlock Series 4. The news was broken last night on Twitter by Mark Gatiss. The first episode of Series 4 has been written by Mark, and directed by Rachel Talalay. As is traditional, additional photography for the episode is likely to come in future filming 'blocks' during work on the other episodes.

Based out of Sherlock's new production base at Pinewood Studio Wales, the episode has spent the last month filming on stage at the facility, as well as around Wales itself. Shooting also occurred in London itself of course, taking in some famous city landmarks never seen in the series before, as well as some unassuming quiet spots in the capital. And without divulging any major spoilers, the crew will surely have some great, funny stories to tell once the time is right...

The second episode to film in Series 4 will be directed by Nick Hurran. Nick becomes only the second director after Paul McGuigan to direct more than one episode of Sherlock - he directed the multi-award winning finale of Series 3, His Last Vow, as well as handling the prestigious gig of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special.

Sherlock still has no rock-solid airing date, but all signs point to it debuting as part of the BBC's Christmas schedule - which goes up to and including New Year's Day, where Sherlock has consecutively broadcast the opening episodes of Series 2 and Series 3, and The Abominable Bride to stellar television ratings.
