Way back when in 2014 after the launch of, one of the most popularly requested items from fans of the show was Sherlock's watch. Prominently worn on his wrist and highly visible during the tense swimming pool standoff in which we were first introduced to Jim Moriarty, the watch is actually at odds with much of the rest of his costume in that it is actually highly affordable - that is, if you could find one. Made by historic watchmaker Rotary Watches Ltd, the original timepiece was actually vintage when the series debuted, but now that is about to change.

Sherlock _The Great Game _12

We've been contacted by the team at Rotary to tell everyone that Sherlock's watch is now being reissued, carrying a new name but very much the same design as the original. Now turned into a range of watches sub-branded 'Canterbury', the watch is now available for gents and ladies in the screen accurate leather strap, or in a 7 link bracelet. If you were thinking of taking it down to a swimming pool for a tense meeting with an arch nemesis or even a splash about, it's also water resistant to 50m.

We caught up with Matthew O'Neill, the Head of Design at Rotary Watches, to discuss the return of this timepiece that has been long requested by Sherlock fans.

Qu. What was the inspiration behind this new family of watches?

MN: Based on the success of the fan's favourite, we decided to expand this classic, traditional timepiece and offer a wider choice for our customers with the addition of chronograph, bracelet and ladies models.

Qu. It just so happens that most of the Sherlockology team come from the Canterbury area. Why did you choose this historic city as the new family name?

MN: That's a wonderful coincidence! Our watch collection is comprised of different aesthetics that are grouped into families which are named after places in the British Isles. Canterbury as a historic town reflects the long heritage of our brand and we felt it was an appropriate match for this traditional collection.

Qu. Were you aware that Rotary was the watch brand of choice for the BBC's incarnation of Sherlock Holmes?

MN: Yes actually- with the huge fan base of the show and the global reach of Rotary, we have been able to make many Sherlock inspired customers very happy around the world. I can't say I was shocked to find out; a man of such distinction and taste- what else would one wear?!

Qu. The Rotary Gents Vintage Stainless Steel Watch - now Rotary White Canterbury Gents Quartz - has always been one of the most requested items on our site so we're so pleased it has now been made available to buy once again. What do you think makes it so special?

MN: I'm very pleased to hear it's one of Sherlockology's most requested. As I'm sure Mr Holmes would agree, the devil is in the detail and this watch has plenty! It has a traditional style that exudes watch making credentials for the wearer and all who notice it; a Clous de Paris inner dial texture, striking black Roman numerals over a circular stamped outer section with intricate dial stitching defining the minute track, a traditional minute and hour hand with an off-set second hand with counter-balance at 6 o'clock, all housed in a beautiful stainless steel case with pronounced lugs and a serrated pumpkin shaped crown.

Qu. Sherlock has extremely expensive taste when it comes to his wardrobe, however, his timepiece is surprisingly inexpensive by comparison. How difficult is it to balance good design with affordability?

MN: Ultimately that is exactly what our brand stands for; we specialise in creating timepieces that are aspirational with great build quality at an affordable price. We design everything in-house which means we are able to spend time on the smaller details with the knowledge and experience that will ultimately provide our customers with the best value for money watch they can buy.

Qu. Many other Sherlock characters, even John Watson, wear watches that many of us would need to take out a small mortgage for! Some people say you can tell a lot by someone's shoes, do you think that applies to watches too?

MN: Yes I think a watch tells a lot about the wearer. As I mentioned earlier, our collection is grouped into families with their own aesthetic which appeals to different types of people. I like to think that, no matter which product our customer choses in the collection, they are showcasing their style, sophistication and taste.

Qu. Other than Consulting Detectives, what type of customers are you designing for with the new Canterbury family?

MN: This collection is aimed at the discerning watch enthusiast who appreciates the classic looks of watchmaking and the finer details involved. It is suitable to wear for most occasions as demonstrated on screen by the great man himself.

Qu. And finally, do you have any other Rotary recommendations or design advice for Sherlock?

MN: If you're a fan of the details on the dial then check out the chronograph version in the Canterbury collection which features 3 sub dials and a date window for the ultimate time recording display. What advice can you give the world's finest detective with the best choice of timepiece?
