The gun used by Irene to booby trap her safe is a Glock 17, one
of the most commonly available handguns in the world. Manufactured
by Glock Ges. M.b.H in Austria, it is a preferred model amongst law
enforcement worldwide - in the United States alone, 65% of the
national police forces use Glock's firearms.
The model seen onscreen is a second Generation Glock 17, first
manufactured in 1988. It features a distinctive check and serrated
finish to the banding on the pistol grip, unique to the
generational model. Two further generation updates in the late
1990s and in 2010 have seen an increased focus on the ergonomics of
the firearm.
As with all handguns seen onscreen in Sherlock, private
ownership is strictly prohibited in the United Kingdom under the
Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997.
