Visible on a shelf in Sherlock's bedroom is a bust of the German writer, pictorial artist, biologist, and theoretical physicist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Born in 1749, Goethe is considered to be the 'supreme genius' of modern German literature, and his scientific work includes the influential text 'The Theory of Colours (1810), which examined human beings reactions and perceptions to colour, while his biological work was taken and extrapolated by Charles Darwin in his own later material. Clearly, Sherlock places the man in high regard as a personal hero from the placement of his bust in his room, and identifies with Goethe's renown as a polymath.
